I would rather have Cold Feet

When you get old, you start to realize that cool things are happening and you are not a part of them.  In this case, it is literal.  In the UK, it is a common practice to use liquid Nitrogen to freeze glasses, etc. in bars.  For those of you who don’t know, liquid Nitrogen is really, really, really, really REALLY cold.  I won’t bore you with details (-197 degrees Celsius), but practically it is used to remove warts, and to cryogenicly preserve body parts (like heads and such).  In a very ironic twist, an 18 year old drank some in a mixed drink, which “burned” holes in the lining.  She was rushed to the hospital and had her stomach removed!

No word on whether the stomach was stored for science.

Fungal Meningitis: Day 4

We have more news on this outbreak.  It was distributed by a company called New England Compounding Center.  23 states are effected, and they have a license to sell to all 50.  2 people have died , and 6 are severely ill.  Meningitis is the inflammation of the spinal cord and the brain lining.  These people were getting infected by a fungal contaminant in the steroid being injected into the patients spinal cord.

Shittin Gold

Evolution has taken a turn that would make Rumpelstiltskin jealous.  Michigan State has produced a bacteria that takes a highly toxic substance, Gold Chloride and turns it into pure gold.  How amazing is that?  Its almost like in Superman where Mr. S takes a piece of coal and squeezes it until it’s a diamond.  Before you go investing in a bioengineering degree, Gold Chloride is hard to produce and is expensive.  Still, this is pretty amazing stuff.

An old man and his junk

I never thought I would root for a KKK member (I was tempted to say Former, but I don’t think that concept exists), but this guy is also a veteran.  He is 79, and his wife is sick and on several medications.  To make ends meet at his advanced age, he has taken to collecting junk and selling it.  Well in the town he lives in, that just is not tolerated.  City hall came down on him, and it was pay 500 dollars or else.  He tried to clean it up, but couldn’t.  After 6 months, they gave him 30 days in jail.  30 days in jail, with black people.  Not a great situation for him.  All of this because the town can now dictate what a person can or can not have in their yard.
